I am a list maker. A planner. It’s the way I keep the juggle of scriptwriting and writing in script, of writing and editing and calligraphy and photography (well, less photography these days) - all of the bits and pieces of my creative life - it’s the only way to keep all the balls in the air. But lists aren’t simply practical. They’re creative. They’re calming. When I’m stuck with a story idea, or feeling overwhelmed by work to be done, I sit down, take a deep breath and make a list. And then it all begins to fall into place. The shapeless begins to take shape.
It’s not always perfect, but it has to start somewhere.
Lately, I’ve been making some lists for the year ahead. Thinking about goals and ideas for 2014 after working on a very cool project.
I collaborated with my friend Heidi in updating The Conscious Perspective Goal Planner workbook she created. Working on the planner had me thinking about the value in all of my lists. From the notebooks to the PostIts. About the possibility, the power, the potential, that comes when setting goals down to paper and working to make them reality.
It’s the perfect example of someone setting out to make the very thing they couldn’t find for themselves when they needed it. It offers inspiring words and guidance partnered with plenty of space to make it your own. It’s taking a look at work and life and the ways they intersect, figuring out what you need and what you don’t. (Isn’t it amazing how often realizing what you don’t need helps get you what you do?)
As Heidi writes:
I think it’s because life just isn’t that simple.
Change takes planning. Shaping our futures takes both vision, and surrender.
Through December 1st, you can get the Goal Planner workbook through Heidi’s site for $5.99 CAD (that’s about $5 in the States). It’s a great way to end one year and begin another. One list at a time.
And now, five great things someone else said about planning for the future:
A goal without a plan is just a wish. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. - Gloria Steinem.
You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. - Rabindranath Tagore
Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings. - Salvador Dali
What one does is what counts. Not what one had the intention of doing. - Pablo Picasso
